Research degrees

Engineering lab

Postgraduate research degrees involve an extended period of intensive, independent research, resulting in a significant contribution of original knowledge to your field. There are many different routes into academic research, but the path you take will depend on your own objectives and personal circumstances.

A PhD is awarded for the outcomes of intensive, independent study that demonstrates an original and significant contribution to knowledge in your chosen subject. You will be assessed at the end of the programme by producing a thesis of approx. 80,000 words and you will need to defend your thesis and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of your subject at a viva voce (oral examination) before a panel of examiners.

Our postgraduate research programmes provide you with the opportunity to undertake research under the expert guidance of academic supervisors supported by complementary research training and development activities through the Research Futures Academy.

Whichever route you take, you will have the opportunity to become part of a vibrant research community. You will develop research skills as well as invaluable transferable skills, which you can apply to your academic life or a variety of professions outside of academia. Our Research students are usually expected to start their studies in September, January and May.

If you are interested in pursuing a research degree within the School, please refer to the below regarding PGR supervision before starting the application process.

PGR Supervision

If you are applying for an advertised research project, the supervisor is usually already confirmed. However in other cases, we recommend that you get in touch informally with any prospective supervisor or, more generally, the relevant school, before you submit a formal application.
