Project title

An explorative study of community-led stewardship of nature-based solutions within upgraded informal settlements– the case of Bangkok, Thailand.

Project abstract

Community gardens and canal revegetation are common urban nature-based solutions (NbS) implemented in informal settlements for climate resilience. Engaging with and tending to NbS through local stewardship efforts can benefit psychological resilience and foster stronger social bonds in times of crisis. Although the adoption of NbS for climate resilience in informal areas is promising, little is known about their support in upgraded informal settlements — by whom, for what purpose, and who benefits. More importantly, empirical studies on how existing NbS are managed and cared for through community-driven stewardship within upgraded informal settlements remain sparse. Using qualitative multi-methods, this study seeks to identify factors influencing local stewardship actions in upgraded informal settlements. It will then explore alternative arrangements that support the mobilisation and continuity of localised stewardship actions. The study underscores the critical role of local communities and their potential contribution for sustaining NbS in the context of urban informality.
