Project title
Mobilising Cultural Heritage in UK Marine Fisheries
Project abstract
The UK fishing industry is experiencing pressures from multiple sources such as regulatory change, environmental and climate change and technological advances, and the industry is in decline. However, it has a long and proud heritage that is embedded in the practice of small-scale fishing, from traditional ecological knowledge, historic build environments, boats, skills and traditions. While this cultural legacy is at risk of being lost alongside the industry, this project explores ways in which we can use this rich cultural legacy to support a sustainable future in the industry. Using case study approach, this PhD looks at the links between historic examples of heritage fishing practices and circularity, alongside its impact on subjective wellbeing.
