Voices shaping the future of health and care
The best healthcare innovations aren’t imagined in isolation, they’re shaped by the people who need them. Our Global Research Institute in Health and Care Technologies is delivering healthcare solutions that truly matter by ensuring every innovation is guided by lived experience.
We place patients and their lived experiences at the centre of our healthcare innovations. Their voices guide our research and help us ensure our solutions are meaningful. We are committed to delivering innovation that addresses real needs and delivers empathetic and positive impact.
Why does lived experience matter?
Lived experience means people who use services help decide what gets built and how. When patients, carers and clinicians co-design, studies recruit faster, care works better in real life, and proven ideas spread with less cost and delay.
- Co-designed trials recruit better, faster
When people with lived experience help shape studies, enrolment odds rise by 16%; if you involve those with the condition, odds can be more than three times higher. BMJ, 2018 - People-centred care improves outcomes and efficiency
Global guidance links people-centred, co-produced services with better outcomes, higher satisfaction and more efficient use of resources. WHO; OECD, 2025 - Accelerated co-design (AEBCD) halves timelines, trims costs ~40%
Accelerated co-design achieves similar improvements in around half the time and at roughly 40% lower cost than standard Experience-Based Co-Design. National Institute for Health and Care Research, Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Together, we can turn experiences into impact
By involving patients, carers, and communities as active partners, we are ensuring our research is rooted in real-world experience, not assumptions. Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) makes health and care innovation more relevant, inclusive, and impactful.
We are actively seeking support and collaboration to:
-
Launch and grow our Voice network, creating a direct pathway for patients, clinicians, policymakers, and people with lived experience to shape research priorities and support the progression of solutions through testing and adoption.
-
Empower researchers to build PPIE into the earliest stages of research design and funding bids, so that projects are shaped by those who need the solutions most.
-
Expand opportunities for patients and communities to connect with our researchers, from early conversations through to on-campus events, ensuring ongoing dialogue and co-creation.
Together, we can accelerate innovation that transforms care and delivers outcomes that matter.

Meaningful healthcare innovation only happens when patients, carers, clinicians, and researchers work side by side. We’re inviting individuals with lived experience, health professionals, community organisations, and policymakers to join us in shaping research that reflects real needs.
-
Individuals with lived experience: Share your perspective and help ensure research tackles the challenges that matter most to you.
-
Carers and families: Partner with our teams to improve services and support systems grounded in day-to-day realities.
-
Clinicians and healthcare staff: Co-design studies and trials to ensure innovations work in practice, not just on paper.
-
Community organisations: Bring underrepresented voices into the conversation, widening impact and equity.
-
Policy leaders and funders: Support inclusive frameworks that embed public involvement into health research from the start.
Turning experience into impact
Every voice makes our innovations stronger, faster, and more relevant. By working with us, you can help accelerate progress in areas such as:
-
Inclusive clinical trials that recruit more effectively and reflect diverse patient populations.
-
Patient-centred technologies designed with input from those who will use them day to day.
-
New models of care co-produced with carers and communities, reducing costs while improving outcomes.
-
Trust-building approaches that make research more transparent, accountable, and equitable.
-
Evidence-based policy shaped by real-world stories, ensuring funding and regulation support what works for people.
What patients tell us
"A technology that could actually measure whether my treatment is working, rather than just waiting to see if symptoms improve, would be life changing. It would give people like me concrete evidence that we're on the right track much sooner in the process."
