Built Environment testing facilities

The School has a suite of unique state-of-the-art built environment facilities that are used by our researchers and can be hired by external bodies. Please contact our Technical Services Manager, to discuss your requirements.

  • Wave basin which can simulate any sea condition
  • Structures lab containing a pipeline technology centre, a rail track test centre, and a fatigue testing facility
  • Hydraulics lab with three tilting flumes and state of the art measurement capabilities
  • Closed wind tunnel and an open wind tunnel
  • Geotechnics lab with a range of soil testing equipment
  • Building services lab with fully-instrumented laboratory test rigs for drainage
  • Acoustics and noise control equipment with:
    • Anechoic chamber to measure characteristics of sound sources
    • Reverberant chamber to measure sound power levels and absorption properties of materials
    • Horizontal transmission suite to measure airborne sound insulation
    • Vertical transmission suite to measure impact sound insulation
