What is Clearing?
Every year, around 10% of students get into university through Clearing and it can help applicants without a place to find suitable vacancies on higher education courses.
Adjustment gives students who have done better than expected a short time to reconsider where and what they study, while having the security of holding on to their unconditional firm offer.
UCAS self-release tool enables you to release yourself into Clearing in order to take up an offer from another university.
UCAS Clearing Plus tool allows you to be matched to appropriate course(s) at other universities that still have availability. This will show you where you can potentially secure your place at university.
To give you a better understanding of Heriot-Watt’s Clearing experience, we are running a number of live events in the lead up to Results Day.

Flexible study options
Scottish degree programmes are designed to include four years of study. However, at Heriot-Watt University many students have the opportunity to complete their honours degree over three years.
Depending on your exam results, you have the option to start your degree in Year 1 or Year 2. You might want to check out how to apply as we also provide an application checklist which will help you through the process.
If you have a Year 1 offer and your results were better than expected - well done! You could opt to start in Year 2 and accelerate your degree.
You will still be able to experience all the fun of being a fresher! Students who enter in Year 2 are also eligible for our accommodation guaranteed (remember to apply by 12:00 (BST) on 24 August 2021) and you complete your degree in three years.
If you have a Year 2 offer from us and your results weren’t as good as you expected, don’t worry! If you meet entry requirements, you will automatically be considered for a Year 1 offer from us.
No retakes are required and, for students from England, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, thanks to a foundation bursary you pay the same tuition fees as you would for a three year degree.
