What appealed to you most about Heriot-Watt University?

Heriot-Watt appealed to me for a number of reasons: the Actuarial Science programme is highly regarded in the industry; the programme is accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) for some of the professional examinations; and the location of the campus allows for you to be immersed in a green community, yet remain close to the beautiful city of Edinburgh.

Do you feel your degree has prepared you well for a career?

The degree’s material covers complex mathematical concepts and applies these theories to the financial world. As the curriculum covers material in the actuarial professional examinations I feel I am more prepared than most to enter into an actuarial career.

Has your degree programme helped you develop links with industry?

The department works closely with both the Students’ Actuarial Society (SAS) and the Faculty of Actuaries Students’ Society (FASS) who put on seminars, workshops and social events with young professionals. I have a diverse network of professionals in multiple companies through these events, which gives me a lot of support when applying for jobs.

What would you say to prospective students considering studying at Heriot-Watt?

The programme is rewarding as it challenges you and prepares you for a career in financial services. There is a lot of other activities to take part in at Heriot-Watt including sports clubs and societies. Edinburgh is a fantastic city to live in with numerous different things to keep you occupied in your spare time.
