Sarah’s Story

After studying at Heriot-Watt, Sarah was accepted into a graduate programme at NatWest before going straight into her current role there.

What inspired you to study your chosen field?

I came to an open day at Heriot-Watt and remember hearing one of the lecturers say that by doing a maths degree, it would give you lots of options for a career. At the time I didn't know what I wanted to do, so this was what interested me.

Did you take part in any part-time work, internships, sports, or societies?

I worked part time all throughout my time at uni. I also took part in the dance and cheerleading sports clubs, as well as volunteered for the sports union which ended up in me becoming sports union vice president during my Masters year.

These all gave me examples of things to say during interview questions, as well as let me further develop the soft skills, communication and organisation skills that are so important to show when applying for jobs.

Did you use career services?

I used the Careers Services a couple of times. I had no idea what I wanted to do after university and they were really good in showing me how do to some research on employers and different roles available, as well as put at ease any worries or concerns I had.

My advice to new students

"Get involved in as much as you can as soon as you can. Everyone will tell you this but it's because it's true!"
