Lolita's story

From Ukraine, BSc (Hons) Computer Science student Lolita Hasanova chose Heriot-Watt in search of a fresh start and the opportunity to code the future. This is her story.

How did your journey to Scotland begin?

I’m originally from Ukraine, and I started studying Computer Engineering at the Kharkiv University of Radio Electronics just after finishing high school in 2021. But because of the war, I only had two weeks of in-person learning before everything moved online.

When the war began in February 2022, I continued studying remotely, but it was very difficult. I eventually relocated to Scotland, and that’s when I really began to rebuild my education.

I joined Edinburgh College and studied Software Development – HNC and HND – and that’s when I realised how much I loved programming. I really enjoyed the problem-solving and creativity it involved.

What made Heriot-Watt feel like the right next step?

After two years at college, I was able to enter directly into second year of the Computer Science programme at Heriot-Watt. It felt like such a big step forward. I was finally back to studying in person again – something I’d missed so much.

At Heriot-Watt, I’ve had so many amazing opportunities already. For example, over the summer, I was awarded a scholarship to do a 10-week research internship with one of my professors. I even had my own office in the MACS department – it felt very special.

What kind of support have you received?

When I first arrived, my English wasn’t perfect, and I was worried about that. But the support I’ve had at Heriot-Watt has been incredible.

I became a class rep, and that really helped my confidence. Even if your language isn’t perfect, people still try to understand you. I’ve found that lecturers are really open – you can email them with questions and they’ll always explain things clearly

It’s also nice to see that even native speakers ask questions. So I’ve learned not to be afraid to speak up.” What are you involved in outside of your course?

I’m part of the Chess Society and Women in STEM. The Women in STEM society actually started last year, with people from my year group, so I’ve been involved from the beginning.

We have game nights and dinners – it’s a really welcoming group. It’s great if you want to meet people who think like you or share similar interests.

Heriot-Watt has over seventy student societies, so it’s easy to find your people.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

I’m exploring opportunities in tech and research, and I’ve already had some great experiences. For example, I was invited to an event hosted by the Women in Tech programme at the NatWest Banking Group – their office is near the university.

Next year is third year, which is really important for finding internships before you go into final exams. I’m definitely looking forward to exploring more opportunities like that.

How has your overall experience at Heriot-Watt been?

It’s been life-changing, honestly. Coming from such a difficult situation and finding so much support, opportunity, and community here – I feel very lucky.

There’s always help if you need it, and if you’re willing to take part and say yes to things, you’ll find so many doors open.
