What programme did you study and why did you choose it?
I chose to study an MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering because I knew I wanted to graduate with a Master’s degree and an integrated programme felt like the best option. I had always enjoyed technical subjects such as Engineering Science at school and engineering appealed to me as a career where I could continually learn, develop new skills and progress.
Was there anything you enjoyed the most about your programme?
One of the best things about the programme is how broad it is. You’re exposed to many different areas of engineering, from analogue circuit design and embedded systems to energy systems and renewables. This variety helps you discover what you enjoy most and which direction you might want to take your career in. The course also includes plenty of lab-based learning, giving valuable hands-on experience alongside theory.
Did you use our Career Services?
I regularly attended careers fairs where I could speak directly with employers and learn what skills they were looking for. The University also provides excellent resources, such as free graduate employer guidebooks, which were helpful when planning my next steps.
Did you take on any part-time work or internships?
I worked part-time in the Student Union Shop in my second year and later returned as a Team Leader in fourth and fifth year. I was also awarded an Athena SWAN Bursary, which allowed me to spend a summer working on a research project I was genuinely passionate about. These experiences helped me build confidence, develop transferable skills and strengthen my CV.
What’s your most memorable moment from your time as a Heriot-Watt student?
Graduation day was a huge highlight for me. It was incredibly rewarding to complete my degree and graduate. At the same time, it was a bittersweet moment, knowing I’d miss daily life on campus and the friends I had made along the way.
What extra-curricular activities have you gotten involved with?
I was a member of the Archery Club, taking part in regular training sessions and social events and I also spent a year with the Photography Society. These activities were a great way to meet people and balance academic life.
What do you love most about the campus/facilities?
Everything is in one place, so you’re never far from lectures, labs, accommodation or study spaces. Facilities such as the GRID and electronics labs are easy to access and there’s plenty of support available through Career Services and the Student Union. In my final year, I also had access to advanced lab equipment for my dissertation research, which was an invaluable experience.
What is your current role? Tell us a little bit about it.
I’m now working as an Electronics Design Engineer at Albacom Ltd in Dundee. I work mainly on bespoke high-voltage power supplies and apply the skills I gained at Heriot-Watt in areas such as circuit design and simulation, power electronics, testing, and project management.
My advice to new students
‘Don’t be afraid to ask for help and remember to enjoy the experience as well as work hard.’
