Profile
What programme did you study and why did you choose it?
I studied Physics. I chose this programme because I was particularly interested in the physical sciences and mathematics at secondary school and wanted a course that combined research exposure and industry relevance.
Heriot Watt stood out to me due to its strong reputation in Physics and Engineering, as well as its clear links to industry. I was particularly drawn to the structure of the programme and the diversity of courses offered - from theoretical modules to more applied subjects. It felt like a place where I could develop both analytical depth and practical skills.
Was there anything you enjoyed the most about your programme?
One of the things I enjoyed most was learning from lecturers who were actively involved in research. It made the material feel current and meaningful, rather than purely academic. I appreciated being challenged with substantial assessment pieces in each course and working through them gradually, applying the knowledge and skills I'd developed throughout the semester. There was something very satisfying about tackling a difficult problem and realising you had the tools to solve it.
I also really valued the time spent studying with peers in the campus facilities. Working through complex material together made the experience more collaborative and more rewarding.
Did you use our career services?
I didn’t make direct use of the careers service during my time at university. However, I always felt that the broader university environment was very career-aware, particularly through industry links and exposure to applied research. That wider culture of employability influenced how I approached my studies and career planning.
Did you take on any part-time work, internships?
Throughout my studies, I worked as a Team Leader at the student shop. Balancing part-time work alongside a demanding degree taught me a great deal about time management and responsibility.
What’s your favourite / most memorable moment from your time as a Heriot-Watt student?
My most memorable moment was submitting my dissertation and finishing my final examinations. The combination of relief, pride, and a slight sadness that such an intense chapter was ending is something I don’t think I’ll experience again.
What do you love most about the campus/ facilities?
One of the things I appreciated most about the campus was how green and open it is. It creates a calm environment that’s very conducive to studying.
The facilities are well maintained, and the study areas are quiet and well organised. Having access to good spaces to focus made a real difference during exam periods and dissertation work.
What is your current role? Tell us a little bit about it.
I currently work as a Robotics and Systems Engineer for an agricultural robotics company. My role involves working across hardware and software systems, contributing to design, testing, and integration of robotic platforms.
The analytical thinking and problem-solving skills I developed during my Physics degree have been directly transferable to my work. Physics trained me to break down complex systems, understand underlying principles, and approach challenges methodically - all of which are essential in engineering and robotics.
