What programme did you study and why did you choose it?
I studied BSc Biological Sciences (Human Health) as I always loved biology at school and although unsure on what my future career would look like, I knew that I wanted to do something in the field of biology that was related to human health.
How does it feel to receive the Watt Club Medal and the Royal Society of Biology prize?
It feels amazing, I don’t think it has really sunk in yet that I have achieved such prestigious awards. In first year, my only goal was to work as hard as I could to achieve the best degree outcome that I could manage. To be graduating with the Royal Society of Biology prize, which is awarded to the student attaining the highest aggregate mark in a biological subject, is very special and something that my family and I are very proud of.
What’s your favourite/ most memorable moment from your time as a Heriot-Watt student?
I would say that my favourite moment from my time at Heriot Watt on an academic level would be working on and completing my 4th year honours project. It’s something that you hear about throughout the first few years at University, and you do wonder what the experience of carrying out your own research will be like. However, I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the process of researching and writing my own project and it is something that I can look back on with real pride.
On a personal level, I really enjoyed getting to know so many different people, as this was a big part of what made my time at University so special.
What advice do you have for current students?
My advice would be to be consistent and enjoy the process. I think it’s easy to get caught up in everything going on around you but figuring out a way of working that works best for you is important and believing in yourself will take you a long way.
What are you planning to do after you graduate?
I plan to go into cancer research after I graduate.
