Though trial and error, Lauren has discovered her own style and techniques, which she will utilise as she prepares to complete an internship in Ullapool.

What programme did you study and why did you choose it?
I studied Design for Textiles, as I have always been really interested in constructed textiles and the design process behind it. I knew I wanted to study at the Scottish Borders campus as it's known for being the heart of textiles and I wanted to explore the traditional practices used.
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your designs for the 2025 Degree show?
My final project honours my late aunt Amelia, who passed away in my first year at University.
My aunt was a seamstress and used to make jewellery on the side, so we were the only two creative members of our family. When she passed away, she left me her beads as an heirloom.
This project is a celebration of her life and the happier side of grief, as it explores heirlooms within families - and how these are passed down through generations.
This year, I have repurposed her beads to create patterns and designs that will then be taken into the knit room. Though it's been tricky and time consuming, though trial and error I’ve been able to explore and find my own style.
My aunt was so excited for me to come to Heriot-Watt and study textiles, as she went down the same route, so presenting this project at the Degree Show was a full circle moment for me.
How did it feel to present your designs to the public at the Degree Show?
I felt an extreme sense of pride presenting my designs at the Degree Show as I was able to display all my hard work from my fourth year at Heriot Watt and I was able to see my collection as it came together. Although my aunt is no longer here, I also felt a sense of accomplishment and acceptance, knowing she would have been so proud of the work I have produced in her honour.
Did you receive any support during your time at University?
My family have been my biggest supporters throughout my time at University, and they have always believed in my creativity, which continued to encourage and push me towards my full potential.
What advice do you have for current students?
Enjoy your time here at Heriot watt, as it will be over faster than you know it. I have met my best friends here and I encourage you to make the most and enjoy your time as you will miss it one day.
What are you planning to do after you graduate?
I am currently completing an internship with Hilary Jane Keyes where I have developed my skills within knitwear, which has been an amazing opportunity. I will also be relocating to Ullapool in the coming months for an internship with a start-up company, Noost Knit Co. I'm excited for this opportunity to help the team and learn how a start-up company is run, which will help me in my future career.
