What programme did you study and why did you choose it?
I initially chose to study Accountancy but eventually switched to Accountancy and Finance by the end of my degree to broaden my future career opportunities. I chose this as I took Higher Accounting in my final year of secondary school and found the subject interesting and thought it would be a stable choice for a future career.
Can you tell us more about the support you received during your time at University?
At University I received support from my family, as I have been living at home and been supported by them in countless ways, which has enabled me to focus on my studies. I also received support from my lecturers and student support services in times of need, particularly where I was stressed or had mitigating circumstances. The University staff have always offered a great listening ear and provided valuable advice to enable me to continue and succeed in my studies.
What is the Watt Club Medal and the Deputy Principal Award and how did it feel to receive these awards?
One Watt Club Medal is presented per distinct degree discipline for the highest grade obtained, and the Deputy Principal Award is awarded for achieving 6 or more As in one academic year. I was honoured to receive both of these and feel they have illustrated the improvement in my grades from my first two years to my final two years. I believe this improvement came from a good support system and learning more about myself and what I need to do to remain motivated and disciplined.
What unique opportunities have you had during your studies?
During my second year, I did a Women in Business Spring insight week at PwC. Due to my success in this, in my third year I was invited back to do a 4-week internship in audit at PwC. Again, due to my success during this experience, I was offered a graduate role in audit at PwC.
What’s your favourite / most memorable moment from your time as a Heriot-Watt student?
There are many memorable moments from my studies, but my favourite would have to be submitting my dissertation, as it felt like I was closing a chapter and finally wrapping up my studies. It was also very satisfying to see the months of work that went into my dissertation come together.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would advise current students to go at their own pace and set manageable goals, and to surround themselves with good people, as a support system is key to success. My parents are a key part in my support system, and despite being the first generation of my family to go to university and their first language not being English, they have still supported me and enabled me to find success without being able to directly help with my studies.
Discipline has also been a big part for me, as I've found that it means much more to show up every day and do even a little bit of work, even if my motivation was sometimes lacking.
What are you planning to do after you graduate?
After graduation, I will travel for a while and then begin my graduate role in September. At PwC I will be studying for my ICAS CA qualification. I will also remain involved with the ICAS Foundation, who have supported me during my time as a student. Whilst studying for my CA qualification, I will be an ambassador, and eventually years down the line hopefully be a mentor to support students in the same way my mentor supported me.
