Choosing to study Mathematics at Heriot-Watt became one of the most defining decisions of Tilly’s University journey. Beyond the classroom, Heriot-Watt became home through unforgettable moments like the Watt Cup and four amazing years with the Netball Club, where Tilly found community and lifelong friends.

As she prepares to make the move to Australia before returning to Scotland to study a PDGE in Maths Teaching, Tilly looks back on her time at Heriot-Watt with gratitude for the experiences, people, and opportunities that made these years so special.

What programme did you study and why did you choose it?

I studied BSc Mathematics because of its versatility. I wasn't too sure what pathway I wanted to take after University, so this degree opened up so many doors and options. I initially applied for Biology but soon realised this wasn't the right choice for me and I spoke to the MACS department who eased my switch across to BSc Mathematics. I cannot praise the MACS department enough, they are all so incredibly supportive and really prioritise the student experience. I have always felt like all members of the department truly want each and every student to excel to their best.

What’s your favourite/most memorable moment from your time as a Heriot-Watt student?

It is definitely a challenge to pick a favourite moment! I would have to say the Watt Cup this year takes the top spot. It is always such a fantastic day but participating as a leaver this year was that bit more special.

What extra-curricular activities have you gotten involved with?

I have been involved with the Netball Club since my first year. I cannot recommend getting involved in an extracurricular activity enough! I have had the best four years with the loveliest, most encouraging group of girls around me in the club. It has served as a great break from all the studying too. I have also been grateful to be involved in multiple committee roles too, which has helped hugely with my confidence. I would go back to first year in a heartbeat to experience it all again.

Can you tell us more about the support you received as a student?

The student support services are fantastic. The Careers Service is amazing and has helped me massively with creating a professional CV for future graduate jobs. Academically, the Maths Gym has also been great. They provide so much help in any area or level of maths.

What advice do you have for current students?

My biggest piece of advice for students would be to get stuck in with everything and remember everyone is in the same boat. University should be some of the best years of your life so enjoy each one and try as many new things as you can. There really is something for everyone, so branch out and see what calls your name!

What are you planning to do after you graduate?

Following my studies, I am looking forward to moving to Australia in February! I can't wait to be over there, meet new people and enjoy some time off from studying ahead of my plans to study a PDGE in Maths Teaching the following September.
