Can you name three things that made you want to study at Heriot-Watt?
Firstly, Heriot-Watt's reputation for academic excellence and its strong emphasis on research were major factors. Secondly, the University's diverse and inclusive community attracted me, as I wanted to experience different cultures and perspectives. Lastly, the beautiful Edinburgh campus and the vibrant city life were very appealing, offering a perfect blend of academic and social experiences.
What programme did you study and what did you enjoy most about this programme?
I studied MSc Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying. What I enjoyed most about the programme was the comprehensive curriculum that covered both commercial management and quantity surveying in depth.
The practical approach to learning, including case studies and real-world projects, significantly enhanced my understanding. Additionally, the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and gain insights from their experiences was incredibly rewarding.
What were the key differences you found between studying in your home country of Pakistan and Scotland?
The key differences were in the teaching methodologies and the availability of resources. In Scotland, there was a greater emphasis on independent learning and critical thinking. The access to extensive academic resources, including online databases and modern research facilities, was another notable difference.
Moreover, the cultural diversity and openness in classroom discussions were refreshing and enriching compared to my previous experiences.
What support has been made available to you during your studies?
The University provided extensive support through various channels. Personal tutors were always available to guide me on my coursework and research.
Additionally, the International Student Office was incredibly helpful in assisting with visa issues, accommodation needs, and funds management. The availability of mental health and wellbeing services also played a crucial role in ensuring a balanced student life.
How have the teaching staff supported your learning?
The teaching staff were very supportive and approachable. They encouraged open dialogue and were always willing to provide additional help outside of lectures. Their constructive feedback on assignments greatly aided my academic development.
What are you planning to do after you graduate?
After graduating, I plan to return to Pakistan and contribute to the construction and real estate sector there. I aim to work with a leading firm to gain more practical experience in commercial management and quantity surveying.
Eventually, I hope to start my own consultancy, focusing on sustainable development and efficient project management. The skills and knowledge I have gained at Heriot-Watt, along with the support of my friends and family, have prepared me well for this next chapter of my professional journey.
