What programme did you study and why did you choose it?
I chose to study MSc Fashion and Textiles Management because I was confident that it would contribute to my personal and professional development. The course details and facilities offered were excellent, which was the main factor in my decision. Additionally, the Galashiels campus location in a historic mill added a unique charm and provided an inspiring setting for my studies. This blend of history and modern education created a perfect environment for learning. I am happy to say my experience at the University exceeded my expectations and deepened my knowledge and understanding of the industry.
What were the key differences you found between studying in your home country of Sri Lanka and Scotland?
The key differences I found is that the curriculum back in Sri Lanka was more focused on theoretical knowledge and rote learning, while in Scotland the emphasis was on critical thinking, reflective learning, practical application, independent research with open dialogues and collaborative relationships. This provided a transformative educational experience, broadening my perspective of the fashion and textile industry.
How did the University help you balance the demands of motherhood with your studies?
Being a new mother comes with various commitments and unexpected turns. However, having a clear structure and proactive communication of the course and what was expected of me helped to manage my time. The University staff were empathetic and accommodating, which was helpful. Availability of the course and library materials online and the opportunity to connect virtually, especially with my academic supervisor during my dissertation, provided flexibility to manage my time around parenting responsibilities. Overall, the University created an inclusive environment, enabling me to successfully balance the demands of motherhood with my academic pursuits.
