After making the life-changing move from Pakistan to Edinburgh to study Business Psychology at our Edinburgh campus, Fizza Batool quickly adapted to the Scottish way of life, all while navigating the highs and lows of motherhood.

Find out below how Fizza embraced the unfamiliar to turn her dreams of graduating into a reality, even with a newborn and toddler by her side.

How easy was it to settle into life in Scotland/the UK?

In Pakistan, I was fueled by a burning desire for a brighter future for myself and my family. Heriot-Watt University became the beacon that guided me towards that dream. The journey wasn't a smooth flight. As a Pakistani woman, I faced cultural adjustments and financial hurdles upon arrival. Finding out I was pregnant during my first semester and being beset by constant nausea and the responsibility of caring for my daughter, it sometimes felt overwhelming. However, despite the initial challenges, Heriot-Watt University became my safe haven.

What support has been made available to you during your studies?

The University's supportive environment was like a life raft. My professors, especially my amazing personal tutor, became mentors. The library became my sanctuary for focused study. With their help, I persevered through every hurdle, from morning sickness to budgeting, each time being a step closer to reaching my destination.

How did the University help you balance the demands of motherhood with your studies?

My biggest test arrived when I returned for my second semester with my newborn daughter, who was just 23 days old. Juggling motherhood, studies, and a toddler was like piloting a plane through a storm! Sleepless nights became my new normal, with late-night feedings, diaper changes, and the pressure of meeting deadlines a constant battle. But through it all, my husband's unwavering support was my co-pilot. Whether it was helping with childcare or simply offering words of encouragement, his presence was my fuel.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move away from home for University?

For anyone considering taking the leap and studying abroad, my advice is to be proactive, prepared, and do your research beforehand. Don't hesitate to ask questions, as the resources and support at Heriot-Watt are fantastic. Most importantly, stay calm and take things one step at a time. Challenges are inevitable, but with focus and dedication, you can achieve your goals. Heriot-Watt University offered a supportive environment that can empower you to reach your dreams, just like it did for me.

What are you planning to do after you graduate?

With my Master’s in Business Psychology with Human Resource Management in hand, I'm excited to leverage my skills and experience to advance my career in the UK. This journey has been a testament to the transformative power of education and the continued support of Heriot-Watt University. For that, and for the unwavering support of my husband, I am eternally grateful.
