Findlay Young

MEng Civil Engineering

From Dumfries and Galloway, MEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering student Findlay Young chose Heriot-Watt to prepare himself for the workplace. This is his story.

What made you want to study civil engineering in the first place?

Civil Engineering stood out to me as a gateway into the engineering world, with a wide range of opportunities within the workplace, civil allowed me to tailor my skills to the specific work that I enjoy.

Why take the leap to Heriot-Watt (and the transition to Edinburgh)?

Choosing Heriot-Watt came down to a few factors, and the beautiful campus allowed me to easily transition to city life. The University offers a wide range of sports clubs which was really important to me, and in particular the Cycling Club.

What is your favourite part of the civil engineering programme and your University experience?

The programme has provided what I believe to be some of the best preparation for the workplace, particularly within design, while also helping me develop a wide range of transferable skills. Through presenting regularly to both industry professionals and peers, I have gained valuable confidence and communication experience, while also building a broad engineering toolbox that I can carry forward into my career.

The cycling club has been a big factor in my university experience, allowing me to make many friends and provide a release from the stresses that I have experienced.

I received a blues award for achievement in the sport of cycling, performing well in downhill mountain biking races, this achievement made me feel very proud of myself.

What's your tip for new students?

Join as many sports clubs as you possibly can!

What has been a stand out memory from your time at Heriot-Watt?
