We encourage a cross-fertilisation of ideas across the theoretical and experimental base of photonics and quantum sciences, and through this approach we have built a strong capability to manage the challenges of contemporary academic research and working with industry.

We offer a variety of exciting and diverse research opportunities, including a range of institutional projects as well as collaborative studentships from two EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics and Condensed Matter.

For students with limited research background in photonics we offer an MSc in Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices, in collaboration with the University of St Andrews.

Formed in early 2012, the Institute builds on more than 40 years of Heriot-Watt's world-leading research in photonics and brings together research strengths from lasers and optical sensing approaches to future manufacturing methods and the fundamentals of quantum information.

Research Programmes

  • Ultrafast Laser Science and Technology
  • Condensed Matter (including EPSRC CDT PhD positions)
  • Quantum Technology
  • Applied Optics and Laser Systems
  • Micro- and Nanophotonic Devices
  • Metamaterials
  • Astrophotonics
  • Applied Photonics (including EPSRC CDT EngD positions)

Please see our Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences webpages to view research opportunities.

Why Heriot-Watt

We're the top university in Scotland for graduate outcomes which means that more of our graduates are employed or in postgraduate education than any other institution in the country and we ranked 5th in the UK.

We're also rated number one in the UK for CEO or MD roles, meaning more of our graduates go on to become CEOs or MDs than any other university in the whole of the UK. On top of that, we have beautiful campuses, across the globe, so you'll get a truly international education. Our Edinburgh Campus is home to Oriam, Scotland's National Sports Performance Centre combined with plenty of wellbeing resources, prioritising fitness and mental health for all students. Our Global Research Institutes look at solving real world issues such as climate change and saving our oceans as well as working on the next medical technological breakthrough and the future of AI and robots.
