Enhancing ability through education, ENABLE Scholarships develop future leaders in emerging economies by providing access to Heriot-Watt University online MSc programmes with specialized field courses in disciplines key to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs).

ENABLE Scholarships integrate online learning with in-country support.  Students can continue living, working and having a direct impact in their own communities, while enjoying access to a tailored programme of the most relevant content from across the Heriot-Watt University curriculum. In addition to online learning, students also receive a designated academic mentor, bespoke in-country short courses and events, and networking opportunities with fellow students and alumni.

The MSc programmes supported by ENABLE Scholarships are fully accredited Heriot-Watt University and graduates receive the full British MSc qualification issued through the Heriot-Watt University in the UK. MSc programmes only offered through the Heriot-Watt Online platform and include the following:

  • Renewable and Sustainable Energy Transition MSc
  • International Marine Science MSc
  • Construction Project Management MSc
  • Real Estate MSc

Selection process

Applications are reviewed by the ENABLE Scholarship management team and a short list of applicants are selected and invited for online interview.

Successful applicants are awarded an ENABLE Scholarship and supported by the ENABLE Network Coordinator to apply, register, and enrol in the specific Heriot-Watt Online MSc programme.

ENABLE Scholarships support

Funding for ENABLE Scholarships is obtained by donations from individuals, organization, and grants. The ENABLE Scholarship Director works to secure funding for scholarships, develop partnerships for match funding, and facilitate sponsors that wish to support ENABLE Scholarships for specific locations, organisations, and discipline areas. All donations and funding are managed by Heriot-Watt University (a registered Charity in Scotland, SC026900). Eligibility

  • Applicants must work for an ENABLE partner organisation. If your organisation is not currently a partner of the ENABLE Scholarship programme, then please get in touch to consider whether your organisation can become a partner.
  • Applicants must have ability to succeed in an MSc programme and be employed full-time in an organisation that endorses the application and partners with the ENABLE Scholarships programme.
  • Applicants must live in an emerging economy within which the ENABLE Scholarships programme operates, and applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  • Applicants must be early-mid career stage with potential to become future leaders to address challenges of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Applicants must have upon graduation, a desire to become active members of the ENABLE Alumni community to support/guide future ENABLE Scholarship recipients and the ENABLE Scholarship program.
The closing date for all entries is Monday 1 September 2025.

Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from the ENABLE Scholarship partner organisation (within which the applicant is employed) indicating that they have been selected from their organisation.
