What is Get Ready for Success?

Many students find the move to university challenging, and Get Ready for Success can help to make the transition easier by allowing you to find out about the University in advance. This is a programme open to any Widening Participation student starting undergraduate study at Heriot-Watt in September 2026. Participation is free and Get Ready for Success runs over three days at the Edinburgh Campus from Tuesday 1 to Thursday 3 September, just before Welcome Week: 7 to 11 September 2026.

Here are some quotes about Get Ready for Success from students who participated in the programme in 2025 and previous years:

I enjoyed meeting new and current students. Getting a small head start definitely has had a huge impact on how I feel about starting university.

It gave me a head start to things before other students arrive and the environment gets really busy. Now I am confident I can find some of the things I need easily and if I need help, I know who to approach. It's made the whole process less daunting

The campus tour was really useful as now I feel more comfortable around the campus, also the information about the student union and different sport clubs.

The students ambassadors were really really nice, it was very interesting to talk to them and especially to be able to talk to someone who is studying the same course as I will.

Get Ready for Success helped me in in getting a head start on how things work e.g. library, services, timetables.

What I found most useful about Get Ready for Success was getting to meet and hear from all the different members of support staff and being able to meet people doing similar courses to me before the start of term.

Over the three days you will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet and talk to current students and find out from them what university is really like.
  • Develop and put into practice some of the academic skills that are essential for success in your degree.
  • Find out about some of the resources (IT, Library, myHWU Student Portal etc.) that you will need for university.
  • Find out some essential tips for survival and making the most of your time at university including finding your way around, managing your time and money and using the Careers Service.
