Case Study: Stuart Brodie

Heriot-Watt shield

I was the first generation in my family to attend university, and the support I received from the University made that possible. I hope this gift can help create the same opportunity for other students - supporting their learning experience and giving them the chance to benefit from higher education in the way that I did.

Stuart Brodie’s career has taken him from Scotland to Germany and now to California, working across engineering, research, and technology. Alongside his professional journey, he has chosen to support Shaping Futures through a generous gift to Mechanical Engineering scholarships. This gift not only contributes to both the Empower through Education and Drive Sustainability themes of the campaign, but it actively supports students whose studies will shape future technology.

Stuart’s connection to Heriot-Watt University spans both his undergraduate and doctoral studies. He completed a BEng in Mechanical Engineering between 1997 and 2001 and later returned to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from 2009 to 2012.

What has really stayed with me is how much of what I was taught I still remember and actively use today. I also loved the campus itself, being set just outside the city with plenty of green space, while still close enough to easily go into the city every day.

After graduating, Stuart moved to Germany to work in research and development at Siemens, where his work focused on optoelectronics. He later returned to Scotland and worked across several technology companies before joining STMicroelectronics, helping to develop camera technologies for companies like Nokia and BlackBerry.

Stuart then decided on a break from industry and returned to academic research. After completing his PhD with a focus on microfluidics, he was invited to join Apple’s camera team, where he spent twelve years and eventually led the Optics and Mechanics Hardware teams. He is now based in California, working at OpenAI, and leading the camera and sensing team for its hardware products.

Stuart’s decision to support Shaping Futures reflects the role higher education played in his own life. As a first-generation university student, access to education and institutional support were central to his experience. His time at Heriot-Watt provided the foundation that enabled his transition from study into research and industry.

Through this gift, Stuart aims to support students who may face barriers to higher education, while giving back to the institution that played such a pivotal role in his own career and development.
