The Homelessness Monitor

Social justice and equality 4

The Homelessness Monitor is an ongoing study funded by Crisis, providing a detailed analysis of homelessness across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Launched in 2011, the monitor offers invaluable insights into how economic and policy shifts impact homelessness trends.

By combining quantitative data with in-depth interviews from key stakeholders, this project tracks changes in homelessness levels, the effectiveness of policy interventions, and the broader housing market's role in homelessness.

A central focus of the monitor is to assess the impact of welfare reforms and housing policy changes on homelessness. The research provides up-to-date evidence for policymakers, charities, and housing organisations, ensuring that the fight against homelessness remains responsive to evolving challenges.

This project has become a key resource for policymakers and charities, providing actionable data that supports the development of evidence-based strategies to reduce homelessness. I-SPHERE researchers work closely with stakeholders to ensure that the findings influence both national and local-level homelessness interventions.

The Institute for Social Policy, Housing, Equalities Research (I-SPHERE) is renowned for its interdisciplinary research on poverty, housing, and social inequality. By uniting experts across fields such as social policy, law, and public health, I-SPHERE creates impactful research that addresses the root causes of disadvantage.

Heriot-Watt’s institute collaborates extensively with third-sector organisations, government bodies, and other research institutions, ensuring that its findings inform both policy and practice. I-SPHERE’s work is a key part of Heriot-Watt University’s broader mission to address global challenges through innovative and inclusive research initiatives.
