We are transforming healthcare by utilising light-based technologies for improved diagnostics, treatment, and patient monitoring. Our research includes the application of ultrashort pulsed lasers and photon counting techniques that enable highly accurate medical imaging, allowing for earlier detection of conditions and more precise treatments. We also explore miniaturised fibre optic probes and advanced laser technologies that support precision surgery and real-time monitoring of patient health.

This work directly contributes to the design of custom medical devices based on novel photonic sensing methods, with applications ranging from non-invasive imaging to molecular diagnostics. By collaborating with local hospitals and healthcare institutions, as well as Heriot-Watt’s Global Research Institute in Health and Care Technologies, we ensure our research is aligned with clinical needs and is translated into real-world applications.

Biomedical photonics allows us to develop light-based solutions that make healthcare more precise, personalised, and efficient, ultimately improving patient outcomes and setting new standards for medical technology.

Photonics is a world-leading area of research expertise at Heriot-Watt University, recognised in the 2021 Queen's Anniversary Prize for photonics. The Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPaQS) is an integral part of a focused research ecosystem, collaborating on aligned projects across our other institutes and global research institutes; The National Robotarium, The Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Sciences and Technology, The Global Research Institute in Health and Care Technologies, and the iNetZ+ Global Research Institute for Net Zero and Beyond.

By bringing together experts in photonics, and a range of scientific disciplines, in a collaborative environment, the most complex challenges can be tackled. This interdisciplinary approach is strengthened through external partnerships, ensuring the research not only advances scientific understanding but also delivers real-world impact across multiple sectors, from telecommunications to healthcare and precision manufacturing.
