Sustaining our earth and oceans

The sustainability of our environment is fundamental to the wellbeing of people and communities. Our research spans land and sea, from addressing the pollution of the environment and water to how to balance a blue economy with a wellbeing economy that looks beyond growth.

Our Life and Earth Sciences research extends across campuses and centres of excellence. Our International Centre for Island Technology in Orkney, is a living lab which provides a unique ecosystem for postgraduate study and enterprising research, from smart energy systems and marine renewables to aquaculture — in collaboration with businesses, the public sector and local communities.

The Lyell Centre, our Global Research Institute for Earth and Marine Sciences and Technology, is a purpose-built centre of expertise in Earth and marine sciences, combining fundamental and applied research with cutting-edge technologies, to address global challenges from the deep sub-surface to the rainforests.
