Can you give us some background what you were doing before starting your Graduate Apprenticeship with JPMorganChase?
Before I enrolled in the Graduate Apprenticeship I was obtaining my national qualifications in high school. I enjoyed studying a range of subjects and was particularly interested in areas that challenged me academically and encouraged problem-solving. My experiences during high school helped me develop strong analytical and communication skills, which I was eager to build upon through the Graduate Apprenticeship programme.
Where did you hear about Graduate Apprenticeships as an option?
Graduate Apprenticeships were often advertised within school and recommended by many teachers. I also had friends and family who encouraged me to consider this route. Their guidance and advice helped me learn more about the programme and see it as a valuable pathway after finishing school.
What was it about the Graduate Apprenticeship that appealed to you the most?
What appealed to me most about the Graduate Apprenticeship was the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge from my studies directly to real-world situations while learning. This approach suited my learning style, and I was excited by the chance to get a headstart in my professional career by gaining experience and learning from industry professionals.
Did you ever consider a traditional degree?
I did consider a traditional degree and looked into a number of programmes, keeping it as an option while making my decision. However, the Graduate Apprenticeship appealed to me more and I felt it was the best fit for my goals and learning style.
How have you found balancing working whilst studying towards a degree?
Balancing work and studying towards a degree has been a significant commitment, but it has helped me develop discipline and improve my ability to manage multiple responsibilities. I’ve learned the importance of taking adequate rest and managing my time. I believe that building these skills will benefit me both now and in the future.
What is your proudest achievement to date in your role so far?
My proudest achievement so far has been participating in and contributing to an automation project. This experience taught me valuable skills such as project management, process and product knowledge, and stakeholder management. I am passionate about being able to help deliver and drive change alongside my colleagues, and this project gave me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within the team.
Can you share an example of how you have been able to apply academic learning in the workplace?
One example of applying my academic learning in the workplace comes from a business skills course I completed in the first year of my Graduate Apprenticeship. The course taught me how to ask questions with structure and intent, which helped me improve my communication with stakeholders. As a result, I have been able to engage more effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, ensuring that discussions are clear and productive. This has had a positive impact on my ability to gather information, resolve issues efficiently, and build stronger working relationships.
Can you outline what support your employer and the Uni has given you in your GA journey?
Fellow team members, managers and senior leaders have shown significant support and interest in my programme. Notably, many people within my space have contributed and provided their opinions and experiences used for my research in assignment pieces. My programme leader in Heriot-Watt and staff have been available and willing to help with questions and queries which has given me a space to ask questions and advice.
My advice to anyone considering a Graduate Apprenticeship is to recognise the unique opportunity it offers to contribute to an industry, advance your career, and support your personal growth. Embrace the chance to learn from professionals, gain practical experience, and develop skills that will benefit you both now and in the future.
What are your future career hopes and goals on completion of the Graduate Apprenticeship?
My goal is to develop deep product knowledge and become a subject matter expert in my field. I hope to use this expertise to contribute to my team, support clients effectively, and help drive innovation within the organization. Ultimately, I aim to take on greater responsibilities and progress into roles where I can lead projects and mentor others.
How would you sum up your overall experience of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme so far?
My overall experience of the Graduate Apprenticeship programme so far has been full of opportunities, challenges, and achievements. Each aspect has taught me valuable lessons, and I’ve learned to appreciate the growth that comes from every experience.
Hear from the employer
Ashley Horsford - Financial Services Apprentice Program Manager
What were the key drivers for JPMorganChase choosing Graduate Apprenticeships?
JPMorgan Chase values talent, and the Graduate Apprenticeship programme offers a unique opportunity to hire and nurture junior talent. Apprentices spend four days a week working within the business, supporting our teams and delivering outstanding results while developing their skills and competence. This structure creates a strong pipeline of talent across the firm, and we have seen excellent retention of our apprentices as they progress in their careers.
How have the apprentice grown during their apprenticeship?
Our apprentices have grown significantly, enhancing both their technical and soft skills. We offer numerous opportunities for them to network, present, and collaborate with experienced staff. Through in-house training and hands-on exposure to our systems, apprentices are able to develop their technical expertise. We provide varied opportunities for them to work across different areas of the business and actively encourage cohorts to share best practices and insights, accelerating their learning and development.
What are Heriot-Watt's strengths as a talent development partner?
Our partnership with the University has been highly collaborative, with regular touchpoints throughout the year that enable us to share updates, quickly identify and address any challenges, and continuously improve the programme. Working closely with David Steinberg and Dan O’Gorman, we maintain a strong communication and feedback loop that benefits both our apprentices and the firm.
What advice would you give to other employers thinking about taking on Graduate Apprentices?
Junior talent requires a bespoke approach and it’s important to have the correct infrastructure in place to support all aspects of the apprenticeship.
Overall, would you recommend Graduate Apprenticeships as part of a talent development strategy and why?
Certainly, our apprenticeships are a key part of our talent development strategy, and the business continues to gain huge benefits from the participants of this programme.
