Biography
After research for a PhD on French environmental politics in Paris and Glasgow, alongside professional practice of interpreting and translation, my first academic post was in French History and Politics at Reading University. I took up my first permanent post the following year at Leeds University, where I moved from the French Department to join the new Centre for Translation Studies, leading the MA Applied Translation for over a decade while also teaching at Rouen University in France.
I moved to the University of East Anglia in 2012, becoming Professor of Translation, and taking on the role of Deputy Director of the UKRI CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership on secondment.
I was recruited as Head of Heriot-Watt's Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) in 2022. Following three years in this role, I was appointed as the first Global Head of Department for the School of Social Science's new Department of Research Methods and Practice in 2025, becoming Professor of Ethical Research Methods.
