Cathal Cummins

Cathal Cummins is an Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University. His research combines mathematical modelling, fluid mechanics, and interdisciplinary applications to address challenges in environmental sustainability, renewable energy, and biological systems. He holds a BSc in Mathematical Physics from University College Dublin, where he was awarded the Conway Medal in Mathematical Physics, an MSc in Mathematical Modelling from the University of Limerick, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the same institution.

Before joining Heriot-Watt, he worked in both industry and academia, including roles at Aquamarine Power, University College Dublin, and the University of Edinburgh. His research spans analytical, computational, and experimental approaches and has contributed to topics including microplastic transport, wave energy conversion, seed dispersal, and infectious disease modelling. He also leads impact and innovation activities within the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
