Biography
Dr. Faezeh Shalchy holds the position of Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, specializing in the development of learning manufacturing systems and the creation of 3D printed medical devices. Within HWU, her research spans the fundamental principles governing the behaviour of materials, mechanics, and structures in engineering. Her particular interest lies in the bioinspired design of materials and structures. Notably, she explores the potential of utilizing data-derived insights and artificial intelligence to control defects in 3D printing processes, contributing to the cutting-edge intersection of materials science and advanced manufacturing technologies.
She has developed a broad research background in mechanical and biomedical engineering. Faezeh earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Engineering and Physical science at the University of Southampton under Marie Curie Fellowship. Her doctoral research was dedicated to comprehending the mechanics of additively manufactured metamaterials, with a focus on their potential applications in tissue engineering. During her post-doctoral research at the University of Cambridge, she has developed her knowledge regarding mechanics of multi-material lattices. Prior to joining HWU, Faezeh served as a research fellow at school of metallurgy and material at University of Birmingham working on Metal Additive Manufacturing of Ti alloys.
Beyond her research endeavours, Faezeh is actively engaged in teaching at HWU, where she finds particular joy in working one-on-one with graduate and undergraduate students on research projects. Her teaching philosophy aims to ignite students' curiosity, inspiring them toward discoveries and fostering creative scientific advancements. Throughout her career, Faezeh has garnered recognition for his contributions, receiving awards such as the Pathway into Academia from Princeton university, USA.
