Biography
Hello, I am Dr Dominic Willcox and I’m a chemistry lecturer at Heriot-Watt University. I’m responsible for teaching 3rd year organic chemistry, where we cover a range of topics including learning about new reactions and retrosynthesis, as well as physical organic chemistry where we learn how to probe fundamental reaction mechanisms (how do you know your curly arrows are correct?). If you are on the MChem program you will have the opportunity to join a research lab in your final year. In my research group we look at using machine learning and automation to discover entirely new chemical reactions for cheaper and more efficient pharmaceutical synthesis, so if you join my group in your final year you may get to use our state-of-the-art synthesis robot (Ottie the OT2).
