Biography

Adrian is an Assistant Professor in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot‑Watt University Malaysia. With focus on actuarial science, finance, and statistics, he has spent more than two decades teaching, mentoring, and shaping academic programmes across Malaysia, the Caribbean, and the wider global Heriot‑Watt network. 

Adrian currently serves as Programme Director for BSc Actuarial Science and is the AMS department's Stage 4 Coordinator. In these roles he leads curriculum development, accreditation preparation, assessment design, and cross‑campus coordination. Under his leadership, the Actuarial Science intake at HWUM has grown consistently and there have been improved rates of professional exam exemption attainment for students.

He is also on the university Senate where he advocates for global perspectives while safeguarding the interests of MACS and the Malaysia campus.

Known for his student‑centred, concept‑driven teaching philosophy, Adrian has received multiple OSCAR nominations and the Innovation in Teaching Award in 2024. His work extends deeply into inclusive education, with notable success supporting students with diverse learning profiles. He also mentors research students in Finance and Statistics, and coaches teams for national and international competitions.

Adrian’s external profile includes invited talks with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and panel appearances at the Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP) in Shanghai. He actively supports global actuarial education through programme advisory, industry outreach, and international curriculum design.

He has completed professional examinations from the CFA Institute and the Society of Actuaries, strengthening the applied and industry‑relevant focus of his teaching. His overarching purpose—as an educator, mentor, and academic leader—is to help students discover confidence, capability, and meaningful pathways into the workforce.

Over the recent past his focus has been on the sustainable growth of the AMS department in Malaysia with student-focussed and industry-driven initiatives being implemented and considered.
