Biography

Dr Anees Farrukh joined Heriot‑Watt University in December 2023. Prior to this, he worked at the University of Strathclyde, where he served as Deputy Course Director for Undergraduate Accounting programmes and led the development of research‑evidence‑based teaching and professional curriculum design. He has taught a wide range of accounting courses, including Sustainability Accounting, Accounting and Risk, Accounting Theories, Management Accounting and Research Methodology. His teaching philosophy focuses on developing critical and forward‑thinking students aligned with Heriot‑Watt University’s values of inspiring, belonging and celebrating impactful learning. Anees engages in meaningful knowledge exchange with partners working on critical accounting, social accounting, NGO accountability, accounting for sustainable development and alternative accounts in developing countries. Anees is currently accepting PhD students.

Anees’ research centres on social impact evaluation, sustainable development, accountability of not‑for‑profit organisations, critical perspectives on accounting and the role of accounting in shaping society. His current projects focus on accounting for modern slavery, accountability of NGOs, alternative accounts on micro‑financing initiatives by NGOs and counter‑accounts on race. Anees is the principal investigator on all projects and works in close collaboration with research partners within and beyond Heriot‑Watt University.
