Online MSc Computer Science: Admissions, workload and benefits explained

Technology roles continue to grow faster than almost any other sector, yet many professionals lack the formal computer science credentials or technical knowledge needed to progress. Whether you are transitioning into technology, strengthening your programming expertise, or future-proofing your career, choosing the right postgraduate programme is critical.
Heriot-Watt University’s online MSc Computer Science is designed to equip career switchers and emerging technology professionals with the in-demand theoretical foundations and applied skills required to succeed in modern computing roles. Delivered fully online in partnership with Coursera, the programme combines academic rigour with practical, industry-aligned learning in a structured, supportive environment.
That balance of flexibility, depth and real-world relevance is reflected in student feedback. The 2025 Course Experience Survey for the MSc Computer Science reports 93% overall student satisfaction across the courses surveyed, reinforcing the strength of both the academic experience and the online delivery model.
In Coursera’s recent webinar, their admissions team explained how the programme is structured, how online study works in practice, and which admissions pathway may be right for you.
Key takeaways
- Two admissions routes, one degree outcome: Choose the Standard route (STEM degree and English requirements) or the performance-based admissions (PBA) route (admission based on performance, not prior credentials).
- Designed for working professionals: The programme is 100% online, built around flexibility, and typically completed in under two years (with up to eight years allowed).
- Clear workload expectations: Plan for 16–18 hours per week per course, increasing if you take multiple modules in a semester.
- Pay-as-you-learn tuition model: Total programme cost shared as £8,995, with £1,285 per taught course (fees referenced for 2026 starts).
- Assessments are online and structured: Weekly learning activities and quizzes, and timed Final Online Assessments that can be sat at home.
- Coursera Career Academy access adds value: After paying tuition and nearing course start, you will receive access to additional industry certifications from top organisations like Google and IBM, supporting employability.
What the programme is, and who it is for
Heriot-Watt University is internationally recognised for its expertise in computer science, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The online MSc Computer Science draws on this expertise, combining academic rigour with practical skills aligned to today’s technology roles.
The programme is designed to support you whether you already work in tech or are transitioning from another field. You will build strong foundations in computing while developing applied skills in areas such as programming, AI, machine learning, data, and systems thinking. These capabilities prepare you for roles across software development, cloud computing, DevOps, data analysis, and related fields.
What it’s like to study online with Coursera
Your online learning experience is structured, interactive, and flexible. Courses combine pre-recorded lectures, written materials, quizzes, and assignments with optional webinars. You progress through weekly modules that build towards final online assessments at the end of each course.
Any live webinars are offered at different times to suit global time zones, and recordings are available if you cannot attend. Discussion forums and course webinars give you opportunities to engage with academics and connect with peers from around the world. Our 2025 Course Experience Survey highlighted that 100% of those surveyed were satisfied with the academic support received.
All core reading materials are provided within the learning platform, so you can focus on studying without the need to purchase additional textbooks.

The programme features engaging video content developed in collaboration with our in-house Online Education team and academic experts. These videos are designed to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible and engaging lessons that support deeper understanding.
As Roddy Munro, Learning Design Manager at Heriot-Watt Online, says, “Our in-house produced media provides more than just a way of breaking down complexity within a subject: it is a means of engaging and motivating our students and helps them feel connected to our faculty and our institution.”
Programme structure, workload, and flexibility
The MSc Computer Science consists of:
- Seven taught courses, each delivered over 12 weeks
- One industry professional certificate
- One final capstone project
Together, these components total 180 credits, completing your master’s degree.
Most people complete the programme in just under two years. However, you have the flexibility to take up to eight years if your circumstances change, provided you do not take breaks longer than 12 months between courses.
To set yourself up for success, you are advised to plan for around 16 to 18 hours of study per week per course. Many professionals choose to begin with one course in their first term to understand the workload before increasing their study intensity.
Admissions explained: Standard route vs performance-based admissions
You can apply through one of two admissions pathways.
The Standard pathway is suitable if you hold a STEM-related undergraduate degree and meet the required English language criteria.
The performance-based admissions (PBA) route allows you to demonstrate your readiness through performance rather than prior academic credentials. If you apply through PBA, you begin with the first course in the programme and must achieve a B grade or above to continue the degree. This route is particularly well-suited to you if you are a career changer, have a non-traditional academic background, or want to prove your capability through study rather than academic transcripts.
Tuition and fees
The programme uses a pay-as-you-learn tuition model, allowing you to spread the cost of study over time rather than paying the full fee upfront. There is no application fee, making it easier to apply and plan financially.
You also have the opportunity to explore the learning experience before committing. Through Coursera, you can access our introductory programming course and experience the structure, teaching style and academic approach first-hand.
Within this course, you will begin developing core computing skills, including:
- Object oriented programming (OOP)
- Programming principles
- Debugging
- Java
- Application development
- Software development
- Computational logic
- Data structures
This “try before you buy” option allows you to build practical skills while assessing whether the MSc Computer Science is the right fit for your goals.
Coursera Career Academy and professional certifications
As part of the programme, you gain access to over 500 courses through Coursera Career Academy, enabling you to complete industry-recognised certifications from leading technology organisations such as Google, IBM and Meta. These courses develop in-demand skills across Software Engineering, IT, Data Science and Analytics, allowing you to strengthen your professional profile while you study, with certifications and digital badges you can share on platforms such as LinkedIn.
You will also have the option to choose a credit-bearing industry certification through Coursera that will equip you with practical, industry-relevant skills. Certifications include:
- Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate
- Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate
- Google UX Design Professional Certificate
- IBM Data Engineering Professional Certificate
- IBM Data Science Professional Certificate

Application timeline and next steps
Once you submit your completed application, it is reviewed on a rolling basis. Decisions are typically issued within five to seven business days.
We have three intakes a year – in January, May and September. Application deadlines for each intake can be found on the programme page. After accepting your offer, complete your enrolment by registering for your first course and processing payment. This will be followed by onboarding and access to course materials.
