Lightbulb with leaves inside

Thinking about taking the next step in your career with a master’s degree, but unsure how to navigate the application process? You’re not alone. Applying for postgraduate study can feel daunting, especially if you’re balancing work, family and other commitments.

That’s why we recently hosted a webinar with Mhairi Bruce, Enrolment Advisor at Heriot-Watt Online, to break down the application process for our fully online MSc programmes within the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS). The session was designed to simplify every stage, from choosing the right programme to submitting your application with confidence.

Step-by-step: The application journey

The application process is straightforward and can be broken down into five simple steps.

1 - Explore your options

With programmes spanning energy, construction, engineering and applied sciences, the first step is finding the MSc that aligns with your career ambitions. When choosing, consider questions such as: Do you genuinely enjoy the subject area? Does it offer clear employability benefits? Will the programme help you achieve your career goals? And what specific skills do you want to develop during your studies?

2 - Check entry requirements

Whether through academic qualifications or professional experience, ensure you meet the criteria for your chosen programme. You can check the specific entry requirements for each MSc by visiting the ‘Entry requirements’ section on the relevant programme page.

3 - Prepare your documents

Have these ready before you start your application:

  • Academic transcripts (marks and grades for each module)
  • Degree certificate or diploma (scanned copy is fine)
  • An up-to-date CV (with an optional cover letter as the first page)
  • A statement of purpose (around 500 words outlining your background, motivation, and career goals)
  • Proof of English language ability (recent qualification taught in English, employer letter, or recognised test such as IELTS)

Please note that if your documents are not in English, a translated copy is required.

4 - Complete the online form

Start your application by clicking the Apply Now button on the specific programme page. Create an account, select “start a new application,” and enter your details (personal information, contact details, and address). Be sure to select the correct academic year, programme, and “online distance learning” as your mode of study. Double-check your details before moving on.

5 - Upload your documents

On your application dashboard, you’ll be prompted to upload the required documents from your checklist. Make sure each file uploads successfully (look for the confirmation in blue text) – otherwise, your application will not be marked complete.

6 - Submit and track your application

Once your documents are uploaded, your status will change to “Complete.” At this point, the admissions team will review your application. You should receive a decision within about two weeks – unconditional, conditional, or unsuccessful.

Tips for success

During the webinar, Mhairi provided some key tips to make sure your application stands out:

  • Apply early: Don’t leave it until the last minute - this ensures time to fix any issues and avoids deadline stress.
  • Upload carefully: Always click the confirmation link when uploading documents, otherwise they won’t register.
  • Double-check details: Review your personal information before submitting to prevent delays.
  • Tailor your statement: Highlight your motivation, career goals and why you’ve chosen this programme.
  • Polish your CV: Make sure it’s up to date and emphasises relevant academic or professional experience.
