Embarking on a journey into online education is a significant decision. At Heriot-Watt University, we understand that choosing the right programme and university is not always straightforward. That’s why we have a dedicated team of Enrolment Advisors ready to support you every step of the way.

One of those advisors is Mhairi Bruce, who has worked with Heriot-Watt Online for nearly two years. Passionate about widening access to higher education, Mhairi plays a vital role in guiding prospective students through the decision-making and enrolment process for our Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society programmes.

We spoke with Mhairi to learn more about her role – and how she can help you get started.

What inspired you to become an Enrolment Advisor?

I’ve always believed that higher education should be accessible to all. When I discovered that Heriot-Watt Online welcomes students from all backgrounds – with or without a prior degree – I knew I’d found the right place. My background is in education, so supporting others to take that next academic step is incredibly rewarding. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue higher Education.

What does being an Enrolment Advisor involve?

My day is spent answering enquiries, offering personalised advice, and guiding applicants through the process. We also host live webinars and offer one-to-one sessions where you can speak directly with an advisor. Whether it’s helping you understand the application steps or determining programme fit, we’re here to help.

What is your favourite part of your role?

Seeing students succeed. Many are balancing work, family and life commitments – yet they persevere and graduate with a degree that can transform their career. Being part of that journey from the initial enquiry to graduation is incredibly fulfilling.

What do you believe are the key benefits for students interested in studying with Heriot-Watt online?

The main benefits of studying online with us include:

  • Flexibility to study around your schedule
  • Accessibility regardless of location or background
  • A global community of professionals and academics
  • Opportunity to graduate on campus in Edinburgh, Dubai or Malaysia
  • Your certificate is identical to that of on-campus students

What would you say to anyone thinking of studying one of our School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society programmes?

Attend our webinars – they cover everything from programme introductions to how to apply and enrol. Speak with your employer too – you'd be surprised how many of our students receive support from their workplace! We already partner with a wide range of organisations worldwide. And make sure to ask us questions – that’s what we’re here for.

What advice would you give to someone who hasn’t studied in a long time?

You’re not alone - lots of our students are working professionals who have taken a long break from studying since their undergraduate degree. We understand that studying online may come with unique challenges, and we are committed to providing support throughout your academic journey. We offer full support through our Student Success team, course leaders, academic resources, discussion forums and more. Our aim is to help you re-engage with learning and thrive in your studies.

How do you support students from outside the UK?

Our support is tailored to the needs of online and international learners. This includes:

  • Specific personal tutoring for online/international students -
  • Exam guides and support
  • Help with feedback, appeals and mitigating circumstances
  • Access to the academic skills hub
  • A global student community for networking and collaboration

What tools or resources should prospective students make use of before applying?

Download the programme prospectus, explore our FAQs, and make use of the ‘Speak to an Advisor’ sessions. Take time to be sure this is the right commitment for you – and know that we’ll support you at every stage.

What common concerns do prospective students have – and how do you address them?

One of the most common concerns for our online students is whether you are missing out compared to on-campus learners. The answer is no. All the necessary course materials and resources are available within our Virtual Learning Environment. You'll have access to digital textbooks, lecture notes, videos, discussion forums and additional learning resources to support your studies. We aim to ensure that you have everything you need to succeed in your online programme.
