Beginning your journey into online education is a huge step – that's why our team of dedicated Enrolment Advisors are here to help you on your way.

Hussan Asghar has been an Enrolment Advisor with Heriot-Watt Online for over a year now and is passionate about helping prospective students find the perfect programme. An avid traveller and football fan, Hussan enjoys chatting with and meeting our diverse range of future students. We asked him a few questions about his role and how he is here to help you.

What does being an Enrolment Advisor involve?

Being an Enrolment Advisor involves answering any questions prospective students have about our online programmes and supporting them in making important decisions with regards to which online programme can benefit their academic and career progression. This includes relaying any information requested by prospective students via emails, 1-2-1 sessions and through webinars.

What inspired you to become an Enrolment Advisor?

As a Heriot-Watt University alumni, I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying here as both an undergraduate and postgraduate student. I very much felt like part of the university and was keen to come back here to work. I feel I can relate to most prospective students, having been in their position before - wanting to progress academically and individually - therefore, I felt as though I could offer support through my own experience.

What do you like about working at Heriot-Watt Online?

With online learning rapidly growing, I really enjoy being part of a team that offers quality online programmes to distance learning students and working professionals who are looking for flexible programmes to study whilst working full-time to progress in their careers.

What is your favourite part of your role?

My favourite part of the role is taking students through their journey with the university. Some colleagues and I had the opportunity to attend our summer graduation ceremonies in Edinburgh earlier this year and it was amazing to celebrate each of our student’s successes and to meet our inspiring graduates face-to-face.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying with Heriot-Watt Online?

There are many pressures on students: some may have family responsibilities making full-time study difficult; some have a job they do not want to or cannot leave. Flexible learning provides opportunities to undertake study to suit changing your circumstances and lifestyle. We would love to speak to anyone who has any queries about online learning or would like to know more about how it works. Take that first step and reach out to us and we can help you achieve your goals.

What sets Heriot-Watt's online programmes apart from others?

Heriot-Watt offers flexible, high-quality programmes designed to meet the needs of working professionals who are looking to advance their careers. We have over 40,000 graduates from our online programmes, in more than 160 countries worldwide. Studying online with Heriot-Watt University allows students to join a growing global community, whilst offering lifelong learning which allows our graduates to continue developing their skills upon completing their traditional education. Furthermore, many of our programmes are designed with open enrolment, allowing students to begin their studies at any time in the year. We also offer programmes that follow a more traditional model with two or three semesters each year.

What do you believe are the key benefits for students interested in studying online?

There are many key benefits for students pursuing online learning. Online learning allows students to earn whilst they study, meaning they can build on their academic and professional skills at the same time. Studying online with Heriot-Watt University allows you to split the costs of your studies as you pay on a course-by-course basis. We also have an innovative Virtual Learning Environment with many tools integrated into it to enhance student learning. The learning has been designed in a way to offer an authentic tutor presence. Discussion forums and cafe areas within the Virtual Learning Environment provide areas where you can network, meet your fellow peers around the globe and interact with other students and the academics on topics relating to your studies that you can post or participate in. Therefore, it is an excellent way to build up an international network, as well as receiving all the same benefits of studying on campus, from wherever you are in the world.
