Heriot-Watt University has appointed two prominent academics into key leadership roles to deliver on its long-term strategy.
Professor Chris Turney will take on the position of Deputy Principal Research and Impact, while Professor Tadhg O’Donovan has been named Deputy Principal Education and Student Life. Both roles begin in August 2025.
Professor Richard A. Williams, Heriot-Watt’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor said he was delighted to welcome both Chris and Tadhg, adding: “Their vision, international experience, and deep commitment to research and education will help drive forward our upcoming Strategy 2035 and ensure we continue to create a lasting impact for our students, partners and society around the world.”
Impact through research
Professor Turney is the former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research at the University of Technology Sydney and joins Heriot-Watt with over 27 years of experience across the international higher education sector and industry. He has led strategic research initiatives that drove sustainably funded, world-class research and fostered strong engagement with external stakeholders.

As Deputy Principal Research and Impact, Professor Turney will lead the development and growth of Heriot-Watt’s Global Research Institutes, continue the advancement of the Research Futures Hub to support a thriving research culture for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, and champion impactful, globally relevant research through strategic partnerships with industry, government, and communities.
Professor Turney said: “I’m honoured to be joining Heriot-Watt University at such a pivotal time. The opportunity to help shape the future of global research through our Institutes and partnerships is truly exciting. I look forward to working with colleagues across our campuses to further strengthen a vibrant, inclusive research culture that drives meaningful impact.”
Professor Turney is an internationally recognised climate and Earth sciences researcher, with over 250 scientific papers published—including 14 in the Nature and Science journals.
