University signs agreement with Dynamic Earth to inspire next generation of scientists

Heriot-Watt University has entered into an agreement with Dynamic Earth, the UK’s leading environmental science engagement charity, to open fresh opportunities and bring cutting-edge science to life for audiences across Scotland and beyond.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today (Nov 14) at Dynamic Earth’s science centre in Edinburgh by Professor Chris Turney, Deputy Principal for Research and Impact at Heriot-Watt University, and Conor Ellis, Director for Science Learning and Engagement at Dynamic Earth.
Heriot-Watt and Dynamic Earth are looking to transform science from something distant into something deeply personal—accessible, inclusive, and awe-inspiring for everyone.
This was accompanied by a roundtable discussion exploring how the organisations can join forces to spark public engagement, showcase university research and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators through year-round programmes of engagement and partnership working.
Professor Chris Turney said: “This Memorandum of Understanding marks an exciting new chapter in a partnership built on shared values and a long history of collaboration. Heriot-Watt and Dynamic Earth are looking to transform science from something distant into something deeply personal—accessible, inclusive, and awe-inspiring for everyone.
“Together, we have a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between world-changing research and everyday lives. We want to ignite curiosity in young minds, empower tomorrow's pioneers and problem-solvers, and bring our communities together to realise the remarkable possibilities that we can make real, together. This isn't just about sharing knowledge—it's about awakening wonder and catalysing action for the future we all share.”
The MOU builds on a strong foundation of recognising decades of joint activity that has seen both institutions deliver ‘Meet the Scientist’ events, panel discussions, student placements, gallery developments and joint funding bids. It also follows the appointment of two Heriot-Watt academics, Dr Uisdean Nicholson and Professor Thomas Wagner, to Dynamic Earth’s Science Advisory Board, strengthening the bridge between academia and public engagement.
Heriot-Watt and Dynamic Earth share the vision that science should be for everyone. This new MOU underscores a shared ambition to foster lifelong learning, promote equity and diversity in STEM and drive innovation through collaboration.
Reflecting on the MOU signing is Conor Ellis, Dynamic Earth’s Director of Science Learning and Engagement.
“This is an exciting moment for both organisations and reflects our commitment to strengthening and deepening our partnership working with the research community,” he said.
“By connecting Heriot-Watt’s world-class research with Dynamic Earth’s unique public platform, we can inspire and empower people to explore, understand and care for our planet.”
Each year, Dynamic Earth reaches hundreds of thousands of people through its exhibitions, planetarium shows and specialist learning programmes. With Heriot-Watt University’s global reputation for pioneering research, the commitment to deepened partnership working promises to make science more engaging, accessible and relevant than ever before.
