Heriot-Watt University Malaysia celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival with culture and community

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) transformed its campus into a vibrant cultural hub as students, staff, and distinguished guests came together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most cherished traditions in Chinese culture. The event seamlessly blended cultural heritage, international diplomacy, and student unity, embodying the spirit of global engagement that defines the HWUM community.

Organised by the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Student Association (HWUMSA), the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (HWUMCSSA), and the Chinese Cultural Society (HWUMCCS), the celebration welcomed nearly 200 students from diverse backgrounds. Notable guests included representatives from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia, UnionPay International Malaysia, the Universiti Putra Malaysia Chinese Students and Scholars Association (UPMCSSA), and Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).

The festivities took place across the campus’s Happy Café and Plaza, where students took part in lantern and fan-making workshops, enjoyed traditional Chinese performances, sampled mooncakes, and joined in a scenic lantern walk along the lakeside of Putrajaya.

The evening was further enriched by the presence of Mr. Zhao Chang Tao, Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia, and Mr. Tang Jing, Secretary of Education at the Embassy, underscoring the celebration’s significance as a gesture of international goodwill and cultural diplomacy.

Although rooted in Chinese tradition, the celebration was intentionally inclusive and open to all students, reflecting Heriot-Watt’s ongoing commitment to diversity, cultural appreciation, and global citizenship.

Events such as these not only strengthen student bonds but also demonstrate how culture can serve as a powerful bridge between communities, institutions, and nations. The Mid-Autumn Festival at HWUM stands as a shining example of how tradition and innovation can coexist to create meaningful, globally minded experiences.
