Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Quantity Surveying students shine at 17th ISCU

Seri Iskandar, Perak, 17 May 2025 – Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) has once again proven its academic excellence on an international stage, after its students clinched top awards at the 17th International Surveying Conference for Undergraduates (ISCU), held at UiTM Seri Iskandar on 16 and 17 May 2025.

Organised by the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) and hosted by UiTM Seri Iskandar, the annual conference gathered 278 students from both local and international universities, including UTM, UM, USM, INTI, UTAR, Taylor’s, Reading University, and others. The event focused on two major components—Oral Presentations and Poster Presentations—aimed at encouraging undergraduates to showcase their research and ideas in the field of surveying and built environment.

Representing HWUM were five final-year students from the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying programme under the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS). The group was led by Dr Azreen Ariff Bin Zulkeflee, who also served as supervisor for several of the research projects.

Our students’ achievements at ISCU are a testament to their dedication, the quality of supervision provided by our academic staff, and the strength of our Quantity Surveying programme. We are incredibly proud of their performance and how well they represented Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

Among the standout achievements was Muhammad Mukhriz Bin Mohd Farid, who won the Gold Award in the Best Poster category. His work, supervised by Dr Azreen, impressed the panel of judges with its clarity, creativity, and depth of research.

In the oral presentation segment, Haziq Danial Bin Shahrin secured the Silver Award for Best Paper, under the supervision of Sr Ruzana Abdul Rahman and Dr Azreen Ariff Bin Zulkeflee. His presentation was praised for its critical analysis and professional delivery.

The other student representatives—Nor Adriana Irdina Binti Mohd Daharie, Qiao En Tang, and Rachel Liew Yee Ting—also presented their research with confidence and professionalism, contributing to the university’s strong presence at the conference.

This marks the second consecutive year HWUM students have secured top honours at ISCU. In the previous edition held in 2024, HWUM also brought home Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards in various categories, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and research development.

“Our students’ achievements at ISCU are a testament to their dedication, the quality of supervision provided by our academic staff, and the strength of our Quantity Surveying programme,” said Dr Azreen. “We are incredibly proud of their performance and how well they represented Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.”

As the surveying profession continues to evolve, platforms like ISCU provide valuable exposure for undergraduates, preparing them for future challenges in the built environment sector. HWUM looks forward to continued participation and excellence in future conferences.
