Heriot-Watt shortlisted for University of the Year

Heriot-Watt University has been shortlisted for University of the Year 2025 in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards - often described as the ‘Oscars of higher education’ - and is the only Scottish university to make the list.
Now in their 21st year, the Awards celebrate excellence across 20 categories and attracted more than 500 entries from universities across the UK and Ireland. Heriot-Watt is shortlisted for the coveted award alongside Queen Mary University of London, Teesside University, the University of East London, the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Worcester.
Being shortlisted for University of the Year is a significant moment, and a powerful recognition of the transformative work happening across our global campuses to deliver a truly sustainable university.
Winners will be announced in Edinburgh on Thursday 13 November, the first time that the ceremony has been hosted in Scotland.
Professor Richard A. Williams, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, said: “Being shortlisted for University of the Year is a significant moment, and a powerful recognition of the transformative work happening across our global campuses to deliver a truly sustainable university.
“In 2023/24 we redefined what it means to be a sustainable university - educationally, financially, socially, environmentally, and through research. As Strategy 2025 concludes, our founding purpose is clear: providing transformative education to those who might not otherwise access it, and delivering employability for all.”
In addition to University of the Year, Heriot-Watt has also been shortlisted in the further category of Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year, reflecting its global impact, sustainability leadership, and inclusive innovation.
Chris Havergal, Editor of Times Higher Education, said: “At a time of unprecedented challenge for higher education, the THE Awards are a reminder of the exceptional work happening across the UK and Ireland every day. With more than 500 entries this year, making the shortlist is a major achievement in itself. We are thrilled to bring the ceremony to Scotland for the first time and look forward to celebrating innovation and excellence in Edinburgh this November.”
The shortlisting comes during a period of strong momentum for Heriot-Watt. In the latest Complete University Guide, the University rose 17 places to 25th in the UK, its second-best result in the table. It is also ranked first in Scotland and second in the UK for graduate employability, with more than 84% of graduates in full-time employment or further study within 15 months of graduation (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2024).
