Exploring the psychology of happiness in the age of AI
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia hosted its annual Psychology Conference on 15 April 2025, themed “The Effects of AI on Happiness”.
This year’s event reflected the University’s commitment to purpose-driven education and research by examining the psychological impacts of artificial intelligence and how it shapes our thoughts, emotions, relationships, and overall well-being.
The conference opened with a welcome address by Organising Chair Dr Kenneth Leow, who reflected on his journey as a psychology student and the transformative role of AI in the field.
He expressed hope that the conference would spark meaningful conversations, inspire new connections, and contribute to students' personal and academic growth.
In his opening remarks, the Head of School of Social Sciences, Associate Professor Dr Jimmy Tam encouraged attendees to pursue authentic happiness rather than simply avoiding discomfort.
He emphasised the importance of living with purpose and highlighted how psychological research can make a real impact on lives beyond academic circles.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Glenn Hitchman, Head of the Psychology Department, spoke about the power of fun in learning and personal development. He shared his own story of discovering psychology and the importance of having a supportive community.
He also reminded students that joy and connection are key drivers of engagement and success. A major highlight of the conference was the presentation of 59 student research projects by Year 1 and Year 3 Psychology students. Topics ranged from the influence of social media on romantic beliefs among young adults, to how news framing affects ethnic prejudice in Malaysian perspective on genocide, and the impact of AI tools like ChatGPT on critical thinking in higher education.
These presentations were evaluated by representatives from Petronas, Sunway University, University of Malaya, University of Nottingham, Kuen Cheng High School, SDS Associates, HELP University, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia alumni and staff.
The event also featured an Alumni Homecoming segment, giving students the chance to connect with graduates and gain valuable insights into potential career paths in psychology and related fields.
The conference concluded with an awards ceremony, recognising excellence in individual and group presentations, as well as best poster design.
A special Student’s Choice Award was also presented, allowing peers to celebrate standout contributions.
The Psychology Conference 2025 exemplified Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to foster global perspectives, academic excellence, and real-world connection by ensuring students graduate with the skills and insights to shape a better future
