Brewing and distilling leader Professor Dawn Maskell honoured with CIBD Fellowship

Professor Dawn Maskell, Director of the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University, has been awarded a prestigious Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers (CIBD), recognising her outstanding contribution to brewing science, education, and industry innovation.
The Fellowship celebrates Professor Maskell’s long-standing leadership in advancing research and her commitment to developing the next generation of brewing and distilling professionals. A passionate educator, she has shaped the learning experience of countless students and professionals across the world, combining academic rigour with a deep understanding of industry practice.
As a visionary behind Heriot-Watt’s ambitious plans for a new £35 million Centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling, Professor Maskell continues to drive forward the University’s mission to pioneer sustainability across the global drinks sectors. The Centre will build on Heriot-Watt’s world-leading reputation in brewing and distilling, advancing research and innovation that supports a more environmentally responsible industry.
Acclaim is no stranger to Professor Maskell, who was voted in as Vice President of the American Society of Brewing Chemists in August, and has been recently shortlisted for two categories in the 2025 Women in Beer Awards. The WIB Awards also celebrate Heriot-Watt graduate Alix Blease—one of Professor Maskell’s former MSc students—who has been nominated in another category, underlining the strength and influence of the University’s brewing and distilling community.
Reflecting on the honour, Professor Maskell said:
“It’s a privilege to be recognised by the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers. This fellowship reflects not just my work, but the dedication of colleagues, students, and partners who share a passion for brewing and distilling science and a commitment to shaping a sustainable future for our industry.”
