The PhD programme on the Malaysia campus aims to nurture globally competent research professionals capable of making significant contributions to technological innovation and addressing real-world challenges of economic and societal importance through a clear demonstration of sustained scholarly research.

Our aim is to enable each student to acquire and apply advanced knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills in the design, development, and evaluation of computational systems, as well as in identifying and solving complex problems in computer science and related interdisciplinary domains.

The mode of delivery is via supervised research work of typical duration three years, culminating in the submission of a thesis normally within four years from the date of first registration. Students will work under the supervision of an expert academic team, normally comprising staff from both our Malaysia and UK campuses, ensuring a strong international research perspective.

Students will also be encouraged to disseminate their research findings through publications in high-impact journals and reputable conferences (although this is not a pre-requisite for viva and/or graduation).

All students are subject to an annual appraisal to assess progress. Students will not be allowed to progress to the following year of study if this process is not completed.

The language of instruction is English.

Research areas in the field include (but are not limited to):

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Computer Vision and Multimedia Analytics
  • Data Science and Big Data Analytics
  • Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing
  • Blockchain and Decentralised Systems
  • Cybersecurity and Privacy
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and Embedded Systems
  • Natural Language Processing and Text Analytics

Project supervisor

Students will be supervised by experienced academic staff with internationally recognised expertise in key areas of computer science. The supervisory team include (but is not limited to):

  • Dr John See – Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Affective Computing, Multimedia Signal Processing
  • Dr Ian Tan – Parallel and Distributed Systems, Multimedia Analytics, Blockchain, Text and Data Analytics
  • Dr Timothy Yap – Distributed Systems, Blockchain, Text Analytics, Data Engineering, Machine Learning
  • Dr Abdullah Almasri – Data Science, Big Data, Machine Learning, Deep Learning
  • Dr Chin Zi Hau – Distributed Systems, Blockchain, Machine Learning

Supervisory teams are typically composed to ensure complementary expertise and may include co-supervisors from the UK campus where appropriate.
