What inspired to choose your programme and how has it helped shape personal career goals?
My decision to pursue Business and Finance was driven by a genuine interest in understanding how businesses operate and how financial decisions influence the world around us. Although I did not come from a finance background, it was a subject that had always fascinated me.
What drew me most to the programme was that Business and Finance are disciplines built on understanding and critical thinking rather than memorisation. Every organisation, market and situation is different, which means there is always something new to learn. Throughout my degree, I developed strong analytical and problem-solving skills while discovering the areas of finance that I am most passionate about. The programme has strengthened my ambition to build a career in the financial services industry and has given me the confidence to pursue opportunities in wealth management and corporate finance.
What were your most memorable moments at HWUM?
Some of my most memorable memories at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia came from performing on stage. From my very first year until graduation, I had the privilege of performing at every Watt A Night, as well as participating in the university singing competition and performing as a guest artist at various university events.
Those experiences meant a great deal to me because the university gave me a platform to pursue something I genuinely love outside of academics. Performing regularly helped me grow in confidence, improve my communication skills, and become more comfortable stepping outside my comfort zone. Looking back, those moments were just as valuable as the lessons I learned in the classroom.
Did you take part in the Go Global programme?
I did not participate in the Go Global programme, but I greatly appreciated being part of a university that encourages students to broaden their perspectives through international opportunities and global collaboration.
How did balancing your studies with your involvement in the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band help you grow as a student and as a person?
Balancing my studies while serving as the Mid-Section Head of the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band was one of the most rewarding challenges of my university journey. I was appointed to the leadership role at just 19 years old during my second year of university, taking responsibility for leading the tenor and bass drummers while managing rehearsals, performances, competitions and my academic commitments.
Being part of the band taught me invaluable lessons in leadership, discipline, and time management. It required careful planning and commitment to ensure I could perform at my best both academically and musically. The experience strengthened my ability to remain organised under pressure, communicate effectively, and lead by example.
One of the proudest moments of my journey was having the opportunity to perform with the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band during my graduation ceremony. Walking across the stage wearing my band uniform alongside my fellow band members was an unforgettable experience that perfectly brought together two of the most important parts of my life. It was a moment that symbolised years of dedication to both my education and the organisation that has shaped me since I was ten years old.
Looking back, I believe my involvement in the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band complemented my university experience by helping me become a more resilient, disciplined and well-rounded individual, qualities that I will continue to carry into my professional career.
