Prepare for a career as a professional translator

Sofía's story

"The programme gave me much more than interpreting skills. Through practical experiences such as mock conferences, the Multilingual Debate, extensive booth practice and volunteering opportunities, I was able to develop the confidence and skills needed to work in real-life multilingual environments. The MSc also introduced me to a wide range of opportunities, from international volunteering projects to networking events with professionals from across the translation and interpreting industry.

"After graduating, I worked as a freelance conference and medical interpreter. Looking back, one of the programme's greatest strengths was its strong focus on public service interpreting. When I began working in medical settings, I found myself applying many of the techniques, ethical principles and practical skills I had learned during the MSc on a daily basis.

"The programme also opened doors beyond interpreting itself. Through the MSc, I first learned about the European Commission's Blue Book traineeship, which became my entry point into the institution.

"I use my understanding of interpreting and my language skills every day to program interpreting teams in the world's largest interpreting service.

"Looking back, the MSc gave me much more than technical interpreting skills. It provided practical experience, professional connections and opportunities that shaped my career in ways I could never have anticipated. It ultimately opened the door to an international career and led me to where I am today."

Hone the intercultural skills required in global businesses

Fasila's story

"The programme really helped me improve my business communication skills and confidence in professional settings.

"The lecturers were always giving us ideas about different career paths and roles we could apply for after graduating, which I found really helpful. I also used a lot of the university career support, like attending careers fairs, updating my CV, preparing job applications and interviews, and looking for graduate jobs, internships, part-time work, and volunteering opportunities. That experience definitely helped me feel more prepared when applying for roles.

"After finishing my MSc in Intercultural Business Communication, I moved into an Onboarding Coordinator role and then progressed into an Employment Relations Advisor role with a large UK company. I still use a lot of the communication and people skills I developed during the course in my day-to-day work."
