Professor Eoin McLaughlin

Professor of Economics/Head of Research (Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance)

Eoin McLaughlin is Professor of Economics and Head of Research in the Department of Accountancy, Economics, and Finance in the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University. Eoin has worked at University College Cork, the University of St. Andrews, and the University of Edinburgh prior to joining Edinburgh Business School. His research and teaching interests include agricultural economics, applied econometrics, applied game theory, British and Irish history (17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries), business history, cliometrics, demography, economics of education and education history, economic geography, economic growth and development theory, economic history, environmental economics, European history (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), financial history, institutional economics, international history, penal history, social history and regulatory economics.

Currently, Eoin teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Economics (Growth & Development, Environmental Economics, and Economic History). He is an affiliate of the Environmental Research Institute at UCC and the Queen's University Centre for Economic History. He is an Honorary Senior Fellow at University of St Andrews and an Honorary Researcher at the University of Stirling. Further, he is Associate Editor at Palgrave Humanities and Social Science Communications and Assistant Editor at Irish Economic and Social History.

Background

Eoin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History and a PhD in Economic History from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He has over ten years teaching experience and has taught at the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University, University College Cork, the University of St Andrews, the University of Edinburgh, and National University of Ireland, Maynooth. For the 2017-2018 academic year, he won a university-wide Teaching Award for Best Dissertation Supervisor. Further, Eoin held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, and he also has a fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (UK). He holds a certificate in Management and Business Education from the ABS (UK).
