Emmanuel Opoku

Emmanuel Kwame Opoku is currently pursuing his PhD at Edinburgh Business School in the Centre for Employment, Work, and the Professions. His research interests include Strategic Human Resource Management in Hospitality and Tourism, Coffee Tourism, Technology in Hospitality and Tourism, and Tourism Education. He has presented at conferences such as the International Postgraduate Symposium in Tourism and Hospitality 2020, and the International Conference on Electronic Business (2021). He has also published in journals including Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education, Journal of Responsible Tourism Management, Journal of Foodservice Business Research (Forthcoming), and Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies (Forthcoming).

His doctoral thesis focuses on the interpersonal mistreatment of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) workers in the turbulent leisure and hospitality business environment, and is supervised by Dr. Rafal Sitko, Dr. Lakshman Wimalasena, and Prof. Kate Sang.

Background

After graduating from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, with BA Hons (Sociology/History) in 2005, Emmanuel was appointed as the first teaching assistant of the new Political Studies Department in 2005-2006. He later spent most of his early career in the Ghanaian Banking Industry and held positions such as Branch Manager, and Head of Department, Marketing.

He pursued and obtained an MBA (Organisational and Human Resource Management) from the University of Education, Ghana, from 2011-2014. Also, he holds an MSc (Tourism and Hospitality Management) from the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT), Taiwan (2020-2022). At NKUHT, Emmanuel worked as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant (Part-time).
