EngD Energy

Our Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is an alternative to the traditional PhD, providing students with the technical, business and personal developments required to promote their careers in industry.

Students will benefit from the expertise and academic supervision of both the University Faculty and your industrial sponsor.

Research projects will be developed collaboratively by the academic supervisors and the research student in consultation with the sponsoring company.

Aims

The programme's primary aim is to provide specialist postgraduate training in Energy Engineering to satisfy the industry's requirements. Graduates from the Programme will have an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of renewable and non-renewable energy technologies with the flexibility to tailor the technical and business training to their research area's requirements and career aspirations.

Objectives

Our objective is to produce future business-aware research leaders, with specialist expertise in their doctoral subject; but who are fluent in the concepts and methodologies in various engineering disciplines, enabling them to direct research and development across these areas. The programme will realise this vision by complementing the development of technically excellent solutions through research, with entrepreneurship, business, communications and productivity skills.

About the programme

EngD in Energy graduates will not only meet the R&D needs of the Energy sector, but they will also be able to work in associated industries. The energy sector drives innovation and value across the economy, pervading sectors like transportation, environment and manufacturing. Students will combine taught courses (at MSc level) with a doctoral level research project to attain the award of EngD. A research project will be based with the current employer or the company sponsoring their research project. All research projects will require an industrial partner, and the students will continue to work with their current employer or the sponsoring company.

This programme will admit graduates from physical sciences and engineering degrees. Expert training will be sourced from across our academic and industrial consortium, while building and maintaining a well-integrated cohort. A foundation of taught courses in energy engineering will provide students with the breadth of knowledge needed to become confident practitioners in the discipline.
